Simien Mountains Trekking “trekking on the roof of Africa”

The Simien Mountains present the most dramatic mountain scenery in Africa: Great volcanic plugs, formed some 40 million years a go and eroded over the aeons into fantastic crags, pinnacles and flat topped mountains, " the chess pieces of the Gods" as one writer described them, tower over precipitous gorges, river valleys and plains stretching all the way to Eritrea. There are many peaks over 4000 meters, and above.

This trek leads through landscapes covered by deep gorges, jagged plugs and striking rock towers. On route we climb some of Africa's highest peaks: Ras Dashen (4620m), Buyit Ras (3250m), Bwahit (4430m). This park is a haven to many endemic species of wildlife and flora, including the Gelada baboon, Walia Ibex, and many bird specious. The Park has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

This trip is just a perfect combination of Ethiopia’s incredible diversity of less known and less visited ancient civilization, culture and nature. On this trekking adventure, you will also have the chance to interact with the local host community and witness the life style and culture of the people living isolated in the mountains with a unique and ancient farming style.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Addis Ababa

Arrive in Addis Ababa. transfer to the hotel. If you arrive in the morning we can arrange an optional city tour.

O/N: hotel.

Day 2: Addis Ababa – Gondar- Sanka Ber (3,200m) (B-L-D)

Fly from Addis to Gondar and drive 136 km north to Sanka Ber.

O/N: camping.

Day 3: Sankaber – Geech (3,550m) (B-L-D)

Trek for 5 to 6 hours from Sanka Ber to Geech enroot enjoying the stunning view.

O/N: camping.

Day 4: Geech - Imetgogo (3,986m) – Geech (B-L-D)

Make ~6 hours excursion to Imetgogo to enjoy one of the best views of in the Simien Mountains National Park.

O/N: camping.

Day 5: Geech - Chenek (3,600m) (B-L-D)

Trek ~ 7 hrs from Geech to Chenek to spot some of the endemic mammals including Walia Ibex.

O/N: camping.

Day 6: Chenek – Ambiqo (B-L-D)

Trek 6 – 8 hrs from Chenek to Ambiqo climbing Buhit Mountain the 2nd highest peak next to Ras Dashen in Simien Mountain ranges.

O/N: camping.

Day 7: Ambiqo – Ras Dashen (4,620m) - Ambiqo (B-L-D)

Trek 7 – 9 hrs from Ambiqo climbs to the Ras Dashen the highest peak in Ethiopia (4620 m) and return to Ambiqo.

O/N: camping.

Day 8: Ambiqo – Cheneck (B-L-D)

Trek 6 – 8 hrs back to cheneck. En route you may see some Simien Fox or the Ethiopian Wolf.

O/N: camping.

Day 9: Chenek- Gondar (B-L-D)

Drive back to Gondar, and the rest of the day sightseeing tour of Gondar.

O/N: hotel.

Day 10: Gondar-Addis Ababa (B)

In the morning, fly back to Addis Ababa. Depending on your departure optional city tour. In the evening, there will be farewell dinner party with live traditional music show (flight schedule permittin). At the end of the farewell dinner, transfer to Addis Ababa airport for the flight back . End of tour!
